We recruit both computer scientists with a background in AI/ML interested in developing new methods for science and Earth scientists eager to apply computational tools to Earth and planetary data. The routes below are for candidates who have, or are pursuing, their own funding. Please contact us only if you have a concrete funding path in mind.
Graduate Students
PhD & MSc
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP) is the flagship fellowship for US citizens and permanent residents, covering geoscience and CS/AI fields alike. Deadlines typically fall in mid-November for both geosciences and computer science — check the current solicitation for exact dates. Research assistantships funded through lab grants are also available.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Multiple routes
The NSF CAIG program funds postdoc positions through collaborative AI-in-geoscience awards. AI/ML candidates with a strong mathematical foundation may also apply to the NSF MSPRF (Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships), which covers applications of mathematics and statistics to other disciplines including AI; deadline typically falls in late October (US citizens/PR only). Ocean-focused candidates (US citizens/PR) may apply to the NSF OCE-PRF.
International Applicants
All levels
Most NSF fellowship programs require US citizenship or permanent residency. International researchers are welcome — home-country fellowships can sponsor a US research stay, including Fulbright, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (EU), Commonwealth Scholarships, LPDP (Indonesia), and the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Fully funded PhD and postdoc positions occasionally become available in the lab. These are advertised on LinkedIn — follow us there to be notified when they open.
